What's in a Roof?

A good roof is more than shingles or tiles, it is a system with several components which work together to protect your home from the elements. Without quality products and proper installation a roof will not be as durable or as functional. Depending on the type of roof, certain system accessories are needed. Three types of roofs which require different systems are Composite Shingle, Tile (clay or concrete), and Metal.

Composite Shingle System Components:

  • Deck protection– felt helps protect wood decking and shingles from
GAF's example of a roofing system, the Weather Stopper system. This is covered by Good Housekeeping and can qualify the roof system for an extended warranty.

    moisture damage

  • Leak barrier – protects hips, ridges and valleys which are more susceptible to leaks
  • Starter strip shingles – help protect against uplift during high winds
  • Lifetime shingles – quality shingles are durable yet affordable protection for your home
  • Ventilation – proper roof ventilation lets out moisture and heat trapped by the decking in your attic
  • Hip and ridge shingles – these are used over ridgevent and hips to blend into the rest of the roof and protect against wind uplift.

Tile System Components:

  • Deck protection / leak barrier – waterproof underlayment protects from water that can come through tile
  • Clay or concrete tiles – tile is a very durable roof covering with a classic look
  • Ventilation / elevated battens– proper roof ventilation lets out moisture and heat trapped by the decking in your attic, especially with less breathable underlayment / elevated battens provide space for air and water flow between decking and battens
  • Hip and ridge starters – specially shaped tiles act as a base for hips
  • Bird stop – trim which prevents birds from nesting under tile

Metal System Components:

  • Deck protection – protects wood decking from moisture damage
  • Leak barrier – protects hips, ridges and valleys which are more susceptible to leaks
  • Metal panels – metal roofs are exceptionally durable and can be very energy efficient and come in many profiles for look and functionality
  • Flashing – covers hips and ridges to shed water
