West Plant Fire and Boston Marathon Bombing – How can you help?

hand holding earth

Many times, when tragedy strikes, our hearts go out to those burdened by these events and the fallout they leave behind. It can leave us feeling helpless or hopeless, or with a deep desire to do something, anything, just to be helping those victims.

For most of us, this provokes a knee-jerk reaction to donate – time, money, goods – to feel that we are a part of the effort to improve the lives of those whose lives were devastated. As a fellow member of the human race, I too have felt this tugging on my heart. But we must beware those who seek to take advantage of these situations.

When you go to donate, try to stick to charities you know. Well-known charities such as the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and others are less likely to be using your money for purposes other than that for which it was donated. Knowing how they use their money to help those in need and how you can designate your funds for specific disaster-stricken areas can ensure that each donation you give goes to the cause you wish to support. Every charity has its “ups and downs,” so to speak, but be sure to look for one you know you can trust with your donation.

The internet is a handy tool, and can quickly reveal real charities from scams. There are some helpful websites listed below that you can use to check out your charity. If the charity has no physical office, no phone number to call, and pressures you with harsh wording and pictures, chances are that is a front trying to steal your money. You can also check out most charities on the Better Business Bureau or through government channels. Some advertisements that appear to be charitable organizations are actually trying to sell something. These should be avoided. With charities springing up all over claiming to help with specific tragedies, you will feel better knowing where your donation is going and how it will be used.

We at Lone-Star Roof Systems are keeping these victims in our hearts and in our prayers.
