A simple leak can turn into a major disaster when not fixed properly. This is what happened to a house we recently visited.
During a roof inspection, our team discovered this rainwater collection system inside the attic.
According to our customer, their roof had been leaking so badly that they had a hard time figuring out a way to stop it. As an attempt to a solution, they attached a hose to a funnel and placed the hose between the walls, where it was meant to drain outside. However, instead of doing that, the water ended up leaking on the floor of the room next to it. The customer couldn’t understand why there was water on the floor when it rained.
When we inspected the roof and the attic, our team discovered that the interior of the building was seriously damaged. In addition, mold started growing in the sections exposed to moisture.
There are three lessons we’d like to share from this experience:
1. Leaks can cause serious trouble to your home’s structural integrity.
One of the most serious issues we’ve seen in the house is the deterioration of the property’s structural integrity due to water damage. When not fixed immediately, the wall may buckle have some structural issues.
2. Leaks can lead to health problems.
Mold grows in moist areas. The presence of leaks makes your attic and walls perfect places for it to thrive. Exposure to mold spores can result in allergic reactions, hay fever–type symptoms, and respiratory issues.
3. Leaks can create fall and fire hazards.
A wet floor caused by a leaky roof is a fall hazard to everyone, particularly children. Some may think it’s easy to eliminate this risk as it only entails mopping the floor frequently. Unfortunately, you may not always be available to check and mop the puddle. Even if you are, this can be a time-consuming task.
