Did you know you can get a tax credit for window replacement, exterior door replacement, new skylights, and new roofing material? The only catch is that the product you choose must be ENERGY STAR qualified, meaning it meets the government’s guidelines for being energy efficient, and it must exist in the owner’s primary residence. An ENERGY STAR home will be at least 15% more efficient than homes built according to the 2004 International Residential Code. ENERGY STAR homes will have extra energy-saving features, making them 20-30% more efficient than normal homes. Not only will going green save you money, but it will also reduce the burning of fossil fuels that contribute to air pollution and global warming.
Tax credits differ based on which product you are installing in your home. Note that installation costs are never included in the purchase price. Consumers can claim a credit of 10% with a maximum of $200 of the purchase price of qualifying windows and skylights. For exterior doors, consumers can claim 10% with a maximum of $500 of the purchase price of the qualifying exterior doors. If you install insulation that air seals, it is possible to get a tax credit of 10% of the purchase price, up to $500 as well. Energy efficient roofing products are also eligible! Qualified roof products will reflect more of the sun’s rays, lowering the surface temperature on the roof by up to 100 degrees. Such a decrease in the heat absorbed on the roof will lower the amount of heat transferred into your home, thus lowering electricity bills. Just like exterior doors and insulation, the tax credit for roof materials is 10% of the purchase cost, with a max of $500. It’s important to bear in mind that the maximum for tax credits you can receive ($200 for windows and skylights, $500 for exterior doors, insulation, and roofing), is in effect until December 31st 2011. Once you reach the max, you are ineligible for any additional credit until 2012.
The requirements necessary for obtaining a tax credit for your roof consist of “metal roofs with appropriate pigmented coatings,” and “asphalt roofs with appropriate cooling granules.” Some ENERGY STAR products that we install at Lone-Star Roof Systems, LLC. include GAF Timberline® Cool Series, Timberline® HD™ and Timberline® Ultra HD™ in white, GAF Royal Sovereign® in white. Most metal materials we install will also meet the criteria. To apply for a tax credit on your new roof just click this link!
